From August 9 to 16, 2025, at the invitation of the Crop Disease Monitoring and Management Research Team, Professor Xu Xiangming, Vice President of the UK National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB), Director of the East Malling Research Institute, Honorary Professor at the University of Kent, and Visiting Professor at Northwest A&F University, visited our university.
During his visit, Professor Xu Xiangming delivered an academic lecture titled "Research on the Sexual Reproduction of Apple Scab: A Classic Example of Long-Term Scientific Investigation and Interdisciplinary Collaboration" at the College of Plant Protection. In his presentation, he drew on his team's long-term research findings to provide an in-depth analysis of the scientific challenges related to the sexual reproduction of apple scab, emphasizing the importance of sustained research efforts and interdisciplinary approaches. Professor Xu highlighted that only by integrating methodologies from epidemiology, molecular biology, ecology, and other disciplines can we achieve a comprehensive understanding of the occurrence patterns and control strategies for plant diseases.
During the interactive session, faculty and students actively engaged by raising questions and participating in lively discussions on topics such as apple disease control, research methodologies in plant pathology, and international collaboration. Professor Xu patiently addressed each query, sharing the latest scientific perspectives and cutting-edge international developments. Attendees widely expressed that they gained significant insights, not only broadening their academic horizons but also deepening their understanding of the role interdisciplinary research plays in promoting sustainable agricultural development.

Additionally, during his stay, the Crop Disease Monitoring and Management Research Team and Professor Xu conducted joint field investigations. They visited experimental stations in Tianshui, Guyuan, and the Liupanshan area of Ningxia to conduct on-site inspections of disease control in wheat and cool-season vegetables. The visits provided an in-depth understanding of the occurrence patterns of major crop diseases and pests in Northwest China, as well as green control technologies, while also offering technical guidance.
